The DIY sector demonstrated good gains on the strength of the positive trend shown by purchasing power, good economic data and the fact that DIY is a hobby for many Danish consumers. Market leader Danske Trælast achieved a sales increase of 6 per cent in 2004, and its Silvan DIY retail format recorded 7 per cent. Bygma increased sales by 11 per cent.
The retailers are going more consistently for professional customers in a move led by such as Bauhaus and Stark. Stark is a new builders’ merchant and DIY format that was established by Danske Trælast in autumn 2004. Previous to that date the stores formed the group’s DDT retail division, where they traded under their own name. These Stark stores generate 75 per cent of their sales through trade customers.
The number of outlets operated by five of the trading groups rose in 2004. The greatest increase was recorded by Bygma with 7, followed by Råd & Dåd (4), and Byggekram and Harald Nyborg with one each.
